On the road to recovery…

17 Jun

I got up this morning, and fought my way out of bed and to the park to join my group run.  I hadn’t seen  my run dawgs in about 2 weeks and I was sure I was getting my butt kicked.  As a result, I spent 25 minutes hoping it would thunderstorm. It NEVER did!

I won’t go into a long sordid story about how I was partnered with a newbie runner that fed me her dust for 3 miles straight, or how my obliques and lower abs felt like Satan was taking a smoke break on them.  The short version is, it was difficult!!!  I did a little over 3 miles in 28:45 minutes, then at the command of my body, switched to intervals for 1.5 miles (alternating sprints 150 meters/walk 100 meters) for a total miles 4.55 in 47 minutes/average pace 10:23.

I can live with that!  I also went to Ballet tonight.  Jeez!!!  The preparation for this new job is KILLING my body.  However, it’ll all make sense when I step in to teach my first class.  Those students have NO idea what’s coming their way.

In other news, my favorite trainer, Miss Angel Stone AKA my girl crush, is having a great discussion on her blog, Fit and Hungry, about why African-American women don’t statistically exercise as much as their fairer skinned counter parts.  The discussion has stemmed from an interview she did on the founders of BlackGirlsRun.  It’s  a cool post.  So when you get a chance mosey on over there and chime in.  Then come back here and play with me, Ok?!

Toddle-Loo (I don’t think I’ve ever wrote that out, and am sure it’s not spelled right, but you get the point!  If not, it’s synonymous with Laters! )

Good week, so far

Things I’m proud of so far this week:

I searched PROUD in google images and this is what came up...

The most exciting news ever!!!

15 Apr

So yesterday I was talking to my BFF, I’ll call her KT, and we were talking about working out, getting fit, and the goodness of cake, and she confessed to me that she really wanted to incorporate running in her life.  At that very moment, I heard dramatic music and the sky opened up, and all the sun in my world came out.

Why is this a big deal?  Well, first,  I LOVE this girl.  She is super amazing, supportive, and probably knows me more than I know myself.   We are god parents of each others daughters and most importantly we are one of the few people who each other can stand for long periods of time.  We have been through so much together, including being behind bars (well, for about 2 hours) and me sitting under a table in her delivery room as she was giving birth to her first child.  So it just makes me want to jump for joy to know that we will be able to conquer running together.  Additionally, we decided to do the Komen 5K Race for the Cure on the National Mall in June.  This will be KT’s first and my second.  I committed that I would run with her once a week.  She is doing the same version of the C25K program I started in January.  So I am hoping I can help her get through it.

Today was day one for her.  (more…)

Hi DC, I’m back

14 Apr

…and my legs are on display in Adams Morgan!

No, I wasn’t celebrated with a statue in my honor.  The reality is that they detached from my body during my run today and slithered away from me in hopes of escaping the beating they were taking.  Darn It!  That four miles was CRUCIAL!

When I was away I decided that when I do these group runs, I was going to make an effort to keep it moving at a good pace and not just run just to be out there.  We usually stop every few minutes for lights, and it makes for a really lazy run.  Today,  the universe must have heard my new commitment because we absolutely made every light…which should have been a good thing given I wanted to work harder.  However, while my mind was on board, my body didn’t get the memo. Running on the sunny side

30 Mar

I’m writing you all from West Palm Beach, Florida. Got in yesterday. Had a few crazy first day teaching moments probably due to the lack of sleep the night before (a record low 23mins). Nothing as bad as walking in to class without pants, but let’s just say, a few west palm kids are really confused about the meanings of a few words courtesy of yours truly. Oops!

So I gotta make this short because I am in a hotel that thinks free wireless Internet is just a little too much customer service. I could pay, but I don’t like paying for things I can steal for free. Thus, I’ll deal with posting on my phone, sans all the pretty pictures.

Thanks to all your encouraging words, about my loserville run, I got up and ran today at 7:30am. (more…)

Ask an Expert, Part One

20 Mar

Hi Blog Buds meet ANGEL STONE.

Angel is a lot of things that you can read about here but most importantly she is my favorite personal trainer/fitness goddess and the other person outside of RRBA I call my She-Ro.

If you checked out my post two weeks ago about Beating the Competition, you’ve already got a little glimpse of her hilarious and educational blog Fit & Hungry. If you haven’t go check it out now, and I’ll wait.  OK, you back? Funny, huh?

Well, apparently, my comments on her ridiculously sick body flattered her enough to commit to letting me interview her on my blog.  (more…)

Challenge-Conquered

19 Mar

So there’s this really AWFUL hill on my run route.  I hate this hill, it sucks pig butt and goat balls both at the same time.  Every time I go out, I feel it looking up at me laughing.

In my head, it feels like I’m running up this:

In reality, it is not that bad.  But it is about 600m of nice sized incline and it sits 3 miles into my run.   So needless to say, at about 3 miles, I’m already talking my legs out of walking AND the last thing I need is some damned hill laughing at me.

Today, was a good day.  I woke up, feeling very brave.  I walked up to my running group said hello and you won’t believe this but (more…)

Signs I am becoming addicted to running

10 Mar

It’s happening.  I’m becoming addicted.  Disclaimer: I don’t know if this is due to an actual love of running or a fear that I will give it up if I skip runs.  Either way, I think I am addicted and might need to go to Runners Anonymous soon.  If I do, here is my opening speech.

Hello my name is Bgirl875 and I’m a runaholic.

I’ve been running for 9 weeks now.  At first it was just a passing goal.  I wanted to figure out if my body could actually do it.  The more I did it, the more I felt I wanted to do it.  I quickly became obsessed and sought out other runners that would encourage my habit.  Some even gave me tips on becoming better at it (shame on you ladies!!!)  And thus, I wanted to do it more and more, and faster and faster.
