On the road to recovery…

17 Jun

I got up this morning, and fought my way out of bed and to the park to join my group run.  I hadn’t seen  my run dawgs in about 2 weeks and I was sure I was getting my butt kicked.  As a result, I spent 25 minutes hoping it would thunderstorm. It NEVER did!

I won’t go into a long sordid story about how I was partnered with a newbie runner that fed me her dust for 3 miles straight, or how my obliques and lower abs felt like Satan was taking a smoke break on them.  The short version is, it was difficult!!!  I did a little over 3 miles in 28:45 minutes, then at the command of my body, switched to intervals for 1.5 miles (alternating sprints 150 meters/walk 100 meters) for a total miles 4.55 in 47 minutes/average pace 10:23.

I can live with that!  I also went to Ballet tonight.  Jeez!!!  The preparation for this new job is KILLING my body.  However, it’ll all make sense when I step in to teach my first class.  Those students have NO idea what’s coming their way.

In other news, my favorite trainer, Miss Angel Stone AKA my girl crush, is having a great discussion on her blog, Fit and Hungry, about why African-American women don’t statistically exercise as much as their fairer skinned counter parts.  The discussion has stemmed from an interview she did on the founders of BlackGirlsRun.  It’s  a cool post.  So when you get a chance mosey on over there and chime in.  Then come back here and play with me, Ok?!

Toddle-Loo (I don’t think I’ve ever wrote that out, and am sure it’s not spelled right, but you get the point!  If not, it’s synonymous with Laters! )

Not your average G-rated post

Forewarning, this post might contain inappropriate content.

So I don’t know if its lack of some very vital adult activity or if it’s a connection that everyone makes that is randomly just dawning on me.  But while working out yesterday…it hit me how dirty minds could have a great time in a gym facility.

Now not saying I have a dirty mind.  Truthfully, I’m as innocent as an untouched nun.  But other, not so angelic people could get really excited by some of the things that go on in the gym.

For instance, yesterday, as I was on my thigh abductor/adductor thingie (more…)

Race day Pics

2 Mar

In addition to dance and sometimes running, I also have a huge love for photography.  I wanted to document race day with a whole assortment of pics.  However, it would have been a huge distraction AND I would never have trusted checking my camera with the volunteer bag check.  So I decided to forgo  that experience and let the real professionals handle it.  Here are some shots I thought worth posting!

Enjoy!!! (more…)

Race Week, Day 1

23 Feb

So it is officially race week.  And more importantly, only two more workouts left in the “non-(beginner) C25k program”.

My task for today was a long jog for 25-30 mins.

I overreached and ran with my Personal Trainer Triathlete cousin.  We did the race course short .03 miles because we couldn’t figure out the EXACT turnaround point.

Maybe not the best idea for my body during race week but great for my confidence.  My goal was to finish in 27mins.  And I finished right at 27mins, (more…)

Week Five, Day 3

11 Feb

Today it occurred to me.  I am not numbering my workouts properly.  When I started, I remembered asking myself whether I should number by workout days (1,2,3) of days in the week (2, 4, 6.)  I decided on one or the other, not sure now which one I picked.  But neither is correct.  I workout on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturdays.  This week, I will workout on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday since this program requests 4 workouts this week.

With that said, I am not changing it not simply because I don’t feel like doing it.  It’s too much work to go back and confusing to start from here doing it differently.  I run 3-4 days per week and teach high impact dance 6 days a week.  The only excuse I have for being too lazy to correct it is, I have to be lazy with something.  So this is it =P

My task for today: SPEED WORK!!!! (more…)

I Get It From My Mama

9 Feb

…And now studies show, it might not be a bad thing.

My name is Bgirl875 and I have a PHAT A$$…I admit it.

I’ve always had crazy proportions from my waist to my booty. Currently, I’m sporting a 27 inch waist and 39 inch butt. That’s more than a 40% difference and produces a butt on which you can literally hang things. I’ve heard every comment known to man about the size of my bottom. I once had a well-known celebrity stop me in a store and ask “whether my back hurt supporting an A$$ like that?” Pretty much the worst moment in my life. People can be cruel. As a result, I’m pretty sure I bordered anorexia for a good portion of my young adult years. I don’t know which was worse, the way my body looked or the attention I received from it. All I know is that my booty overshadowed my entire being and I wholeheartedly resented it for most of my life. (more…)

Week four, Day 3 (remix)

4 Feb

I’m happy to report, Ice Cube has come back into my life singing “Today, was a good day!”

I took the advice of one of my awesome readers  and gave myself permission to take it easy in my run today.  For me, this meant not letting the numbers control me and feeling good about running at a pace I can handle.  And not “handle” as in I can do it but as a result I feel paralyzed from the waste down for several days after.  But “handle” as in it’s a challenge but it’s appropriate for my level of training.

Today, was probably one of my best runs because it was seriously just about running.  (more…)

Week Four, Day 5: To speed or not to speed

31 Jan

…that is the question?

Actually there were a few questions during this mornings workout.  Starting with how come I can only find one indoor track in my area open on a Saturday morning?  Why does that make any sense?   Apparently runners ARE hardcore and thus MUST always, even during a snowstorm, run OUTDOORS!

Anyway, today, I did my first speed workout, on the hamster wheel.  I was so looking forward to being on an actual metered track, but apparently mother nature had other plans. (more…)

Week Four, Day 1

27 Jan

Today I ran for 30 mins, only stopping to stretch twice…darn leg cramps!

Today’s tasks

15 min Run (3mins@5.8mph, 4 mins@6mph, 4mins@6.2mph, 4mins@6.5mph)

5 min Light Jog (@5.2mph)

10 min Run (2mins@6.2mph, 4mins@6.5mph, 4mins@7mph)

After the last run, I was so depressed about my progress.  I kept considering whether I needed to slow down my training or just decided to do something different altogether.  My body was in a lot of pain.  I didn’t feel like it was BAD pain, but it certainly didn’t feel good.  I was starting to believe that maybe my fear of not having a “running suitable” body was beginning to come true and it really got me down.

This morning, it took a lot longer to get out of the bed.  I stopped and looked at the computer for a while and got to the place where either I was going to call it quits right then, or get back on the horse and keep going.  I decided to head downstairs after realizing that I couldn’t live with the fact that I had come halfway through the program only to give up. (more…)
