Introducing…Stedman

28 Apr

Hey Oprah, I have a Stedman too!

My “Lil Steddy” is slim, dark and handsome, oh and slightly bulky in all the right places.  He runs with me, helping me along the way.  Today he yelled at me for going too fast/slow.  Yep, he know what I want and need and keeps me right on target.  I’m in love! Continue reading

Isn’t it Ironic?

28 Apr

What I’m about to relay may not actually be an example of “irony”, it’s more like what my mama would call “you got yo’ nerve, girl”.  But as I’ve recently learned that most people misuse the word “irony”, I’m all confused about it.  So in my usual highly clever fashion, this post is dedicated to the illiterate runners such as myself who may or may not think it’s IRONIC that a girl who recently despised running, would write a post shunning people who despise running.

Sunday night when I was out for a friend’s birthday, singing karaoke at an insanely cool rotating bar which sits about 15 stories in the air, the topic came up about how bad running is for your body.  Now, keeping in mind one person at this table knows about my secret journey to “Run, Black Girl, Run”, I tried to remain calm but felt the inner debater in me rear her ugly head.  Continue reading

There’s a new G in town

24 Apr

So yesterday I headed out for my first run with the New Garmin. Yep, I got a Garmin, I got a Garmin. I’m EXCITED, can you tell? Well, I can’t really say new, it’s new-sed, as I bought it from a guy on Craig’s list who referred to pants as trousers. Needless to say I was super stoked to try it out. I usually do one run per week with the group since that’s all I can handle with all the talking they prefer to do. But this week, I had to go back.  When I woke up in the morning, my knees literally jumped out of their sockets and said “Oh hell no!” Apparently, they weren’t excited about the impending 4.5 mile run. We made a compromise, we would get a short run in, just so I could play with the Garmin, but cut it short if needed. Continue reading

Good week, so far

Things I’m proud of so far this week:

I searched PROUD in google images and this is what came up...

The most exciting news ever!!!

15 Apr

So yesterday I was talking to my BFF, I’ll call her KT, and we were talking about working out, getting fit, and the goodness of cake, and she confessed to me that she really wanted to incorporate running in her life.  At that very moment, I heard dramatic music and the sky opened up, and all the sun in my world came out.

Why is this a big deal?  Well, first,  I LOVE this girl.  She is super amazing, supportive, and probably knows me more than I know myself.   We are god parents of each others daughters and most importantly we are one of the few people who each other can stand for long periods of time.  We have been through so much together, including being behind bars (well, for about 2 hours) and me sitting under a table in her delivery room as she was giving birth to her first child.  So it just makes me want to jump for joy to know that we will be able to conquer running together.  Additionally, we decided to do the Komen 5K Race for the Cure on the National Mall in June.  This will be KT’s first and my second.  I committed that I would run with her once a week.  She is doing the same version of the C25K program I started in January.  So I am hoping I can help her get through it.

Today was day one for her.  Continue reading

Hi DC, I’m back

14 Apr

…and my legs are on display in Adams Morgan!

No, I wasn’t celebrated with a statue in my honor.  The reality is that they detached from my body during my run today and slithered away from me in hopes of escaping the beating they were taking.  Darn It!  That four miles was CRUCIAL!

When I was away I decided that when I do these group runs, I was going to make an effort to keep it moving at a good pace and not just run just to be out there.  We usually stop every few minutes for lights, and it makes for a really lazy run.  Today,  the universe must have heard my new commitment because we absolutely made every light…which should have been a good thing given I wanted to work harder.  However, while my mind was on board, my body didn’t get the memo. Ask the Expert: The Conclusion

7 Apr

I got the best email today from Miss Angel Stone AKA Fitness Goddess/Personal Trainer/She-Ro/Amazing Muscles-Haver/Fellow Running Addict.  The answers to your “running” questions from my previous post entitled “Ask The Expert”.  For those of you that missed it, here is the skinny.  My awesome personal trainer, Angel Stone, was gracious enough to answer questions from readers on the topic of running.   She got some really great questions, and here are her really great answers. News Alert! Bgirl875 still alive!

7 Apr

I did not hang myself with the treadmill cord.  I made it through 3.5 miles on the dreaded t-mill on Sunday and added another 2.9 miles on that bad boy today.  Not what I would have preferred today but it was almost 80 degrees when I woke up this morning, so I figure I’d rather run indoors more effectively than slowing down to compensate for the heat.

I was able to keep a 6.5mph speed today, which apparently is not feasible for me outdoors.  It makes me so mad that I am so much faster on a treadmill.  I like being fast but I despise running on a conveyor belt, even a souped up one with Satellite TV, a 5k trail, and an annoying personal trainer.  However, I’m going to take this time to enjoy running faster and not complain about the lack of cool atmosphere. Not your average G-rated post

3 Apr

Forewarning, this post might contain inappropriate content.

So I don’t know if its lack of some very vital adult activity or if it’s a connection that everyone makes that is randomly just dawning on me.  But while working out yesterday…it hit me how dirty minds could have a great time in a gym facility.

Now not saying I have a dirty mind.  Truthfully, I’m as innocent as an untouched nun.  But other, not so angelic people could get really excited by some of the things that go on in the gym.

For instance, yesterday, as I was on my thigh abductor/adductor thingie Continue reading

Staying on track…well, mostly

1 Apr

I can’t wait until I can spend more time on blog posting. Please forgive any grammatical/spelling errors. It might just be my public school education, but I’d rather you believe it’s my fat fingers typing on my very sensitive Iphone.

The thing about this “really” cool job is…it’s a lot of work. Plus the jobs I left at home, they didn’t really stop. So my life for the next few days is working 10-5 then catching up on emails, and working on my computer for at least 2-3 hours in the evening. And somewhere in between that time working out and eating. Just saying, it’s a lot and is NOT contrary to popular belief, a working vacation.

However, the fitness/running gods will be happy as I did complete 20 mins on the elliptical, and 30 mins of strength training yesterday. And got out at 5:37pm today with not one cloud in the sky and 80 degree temps and ran. Continue reading
